Get Ready

6x6 oil on board

This was really a challenge - everything is in the shade except for a few bits of sunlight sneaking in.

I learned a method from Carol Marine about where to start - instead of working background to foreground or dark to light, she first paints the "vulnerable" areas: the colors that will lose their impact if they are muddied by the surrounding color. So I started with that sunlit spot on the wall and the bright parts of the chair. I think it made a big difference; I'd never get the fresh color if I was painting on top of an underpainting.

Pink Trim

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6"

In the arboretum there's this cute little green building with pink trim. Every time I see it I want to paint it.

After

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6"

This was a little experimental for me, a more abstract style than I usually try. One day at the beach there was a storm on shore, but the little island where we were moored was in sunshine. The colors were incredible. This scene is a little creek on the island, with the storm just passing behind.

Available for auction on my Daily Paintworks gallery.
