Bowl of Citrus

6" x 6" oil on hardboard

The DPW challenge last week was "Yellow." Fortuitously, I've been working on some still lifes with lemons and limes in preparation for a workshop I'm teaching.

This was a more complicated setup than I would normally attempt, with so much fruit in the bowl, but the cropping seemed right. Believe it or not those are lemons, not oranges. I kept them around so long trying different things, they really darkened up by the second week ;-)

6" x 6" oil on hardboard

I painted this for the DPW "Shadow" challenge. I like looking through the shadows to the sunlit area beyond. I'm not completely enamored with my rendering, though. It's OK as a study, but it seems kind of stiff and too literal.

Yellow Flowers

5.75" x 8"
oil on hardboard

Really happy with this one. There's a lot of blue and purple shadow underpainted, and it worked well.

It was supposed to be 6x8, but the table saw isn't always a precise instrument...

Bench at the Lily Pond

10.75" x 16"
Oil pastel on paper

I decided to try a more ambitious scene with the oil pastels. This is larger than I usually paint, but the nice thing about the pastels is you don't have to consider drying time. I worked on this in several sessions, with a pretty tight underdrawing.

Apparently I forgot to take a picture before I started working, so the background is already in place.

I think I might like the drawing better than the painting.
