This is a street on the island of Terceira. I chose it for June's Virtual Paintout in the Azores. What an incredible place - it seems there's not a single spot without a fabulous view. The islands are volcanic, and some have wonderful inland lakes. In the Google streetviews - taken in April and August - there are gorgeous flowers everywhere, banks of azaleas and hydrangeas.

A detailed sketch with white pencil on black gessoed board.

Establishing the lightest values.

Filling in the sun-lit areas.

Almost done, but it seems very cold, so I add some warm washes to finish up (see final).

  1. I love how you created the warm light with the washes. It has a wonderful sense of place, I feel like I want to walk down the road and see what's around the curve!
DO you ever do this kind of work in acrylic? I forgot.

  3. Maria-Thank you beyond words- I'm a recently retired office manager who is getting ready to rip up the old carpet in my mobile home. Living room and one bedroom will be my new studio.
I have looked at all the artist's studios and have 2 pages of great notes. Again Thank you Thank you for thinking this up and getting it going!

    1. I'm so glad you liked it! I got lots of ideas myself. Of course the first one I implemented was building a window perch for my cat :-)

It's always wonderful to have a lot of space, but one thing I did notice is that the size of the studio is not necessarily relevant to the quality of the painting! All of those wonderful artists worked in very different spaces, but all produce brilliant work.

Do you have a painting blog yourself?
