Commuter Art
Some of you may know that I recently started a new job. I'm super excited about it!
At the same time, transitioning to a full-time schedule is difficult. My primary concern is "When will I have time to paint?" I actually thought about trying to paint in the car! (I'm carpooling, not driving :-)
That's very impractical, but I can draw in the car. So I bought a sketchbook, and put it in a bag with a few pencils and a kneaded eraser. My idea was to take a picture with my phone, and use that for reference.
So far it's working out. It serves two purposes: I get some art time, and I'm too busy to tell my husband how to drive. It's a win-win.
I can't see much detail drawing from my phone, which is probably good—I can't get too tight with it. I hope my drawing skills will improve over time—I don't really have any technique. I can draft a scene pretty well, but without any particular style. Also there's an element of randomness, introduced by bumps and potholes, that makes my car sketches more dynamic than my usual work!
I plan to develop one of them into a painting each week. So if all goes well, next Monday you'll see the first Commuter Painting.

Aug 5 About 2 miles into the drive; a rural road. |
Aug 6 This is a very lovely person who doesn't deserve to be inaccurately depicted in such a lousy drawing. I really need to work on my portraiture skills. |
Aug 8 (I skipped Wednesday) Corner of Edenton and McDowell. I like the traffic lights going out of frame. |
Aug 9 Dawson and Lane. There's a restaurant or whatnot with some palm trees. |

That's a great idea! I don't see a painting here yet so I'm guessing you were too busy the first week to fit it in but I hope you can manage it most weeks. The words Dawson and Lane caught my eye because my maiden name is Dawson and my parents and a sibling live on Dawson Lane so I see that road sign often.
ReplyDeleteI did do a painting, but was too busy with the blog carnival to do anything with it. Next week!
DeleteI wish I could do something like that (whilst travelling) but I am the only one who drives ugh... Great idea Marla!
ReplyDeleteI keep saying, "If people text while driving, why not paint?" JK, don't try it!
